13. Alter Markt Der Aufstieg zum Schloss führt durch das Schlossgässli (östlicherKronenplatz)überdenim19.JahrhundertzurStrasse ausgebauten äusseren Schlossgraben. Bei einem Abstecher nach links zum alten Markt ist die teilweise erhaltene Wehrmauer an der Hangkante zu sehen. Der Name «alter Markt» lässt darauf schliessen, dass es sich hier um die älteste Siedlung mit Marktplatz auf dem Gebiet von Burgdorf handelt, die dann später durch die neuere Stadt- entwicklung abgelöst wurde. Heute steht hier noch das älteste in Burgdorf erhaltene Wohnhaus, das Truberhaus. 14. Schloss Die einzigartige topografische Situation des Schlossfelsens führte bereits in frühgeschichtlicher Zeit zu Befestigungs- anlagen. Die hochmittelalterliche Festung wird urkundlich 1130 erstmals erwähnt. Im 11. Jahrhundert gelangte sie an die Grafen von Rheinfelden und 1090 an die Herzöge von Zähringen, danach an die Kyburger und schliesslich an Bern. Vor dem Torturm ist der 1982 grösstenteils wie- der freigelegte, rund 7 Meter tiefe Burggraben sichtbar, der zu zwei Dritteln von der 1581–1587 letztmals erneuerten Tuff-Bogenbrücke überwölbt wird. Sichtbar wird hier auch die mächtige Wehrmauer aus prachtvollen Sandstein- und Tuffbuckelquadern mit zwei halbrunden Türmen und dem ehemaligen Torturm. Das Schloss hat alle wesentlichen Teile aus seiner Hauptbauzeit bewahrt: Zwei freistehende hohe Wehrtürme und eine massive, von Graben, Wall und kleineren Türmen flankierte Wehrmauer des 13. Jahrhunderts schützen das Burgplateau gegen Norden. Gegen Süden stehen die repräsentativen Grossbauten des viergeschossigen Palas und der Halle, die insgesamt drei grosse Säle enthielten, wovon der kleinste, der heute sogenannte Rittersaal, unver- baut erhalten ist. Das Raumvolumen des grössten Saals in der Halle wurde im 16. Jahrhundert in zwei Stockwerke und zahl- reiche Einzelräume unterteilt. Es gab zwei Schlosskapellen, wovon die kleinere samt gotischen Fresken erhalten ist. Das Schloss Burgdorf ist heute die besterhaltene zähringi- sche Schlossanlage der Schweiz. 13. Alter Markt The climb up to the Castle takes us through the Schloss- gässli (eastern Kronenplatz) across the outer castle moat that was widened into a street in the 19th century. A short detour to the left to the old market square reveals the partial- ly preserved fortification wall on the sloping edge. The name ’alter Markt’ (old market) suggests that this was probably the oldest settlement with a market square in the Burgdorf re- gion, later replaced by the more recent urban development. Still standing on this spot is the oldest residential house to have been preserved here in Burgdorf, the Truberhaus. 14. Castle Already in prehistoric times the unique topography of the castle rock resulted in a fortification. The high-mediaeval fortress was first mentioned in an official document in 1130. In the 11th century, it passed to the Counts of Rheinfelden and, in 1090, to the Dukes of Zähringen, then to the Kyburg dynasty and, finally, to Bern. Visible in front of the gate tower is the moat, approx. 7m deep, most of which was uncovered in 1982. Two-thirds of the moat is vaulted by the tuff arch bridge, which was last renewed in 1581–1587. Also visible here is the mighty defensive wall of magnificent sandstone and tuff ashlar blocks with two semicircular towers and the former gate tower. The Castle has preserved all the essential sections from its main construction period: two tall free-standing defence towers and a massive 13th century defensive wall flanked by a moat, rampart and smal- ler towers protecting the castle plateau to the north. To the south, the imposing and stately buildings that make up the four-storey palas and grand hall, which once comprised a total of three large halls, the smallest of which, the so-called Knights’ Hall, is preserved intact. In the 16th century the spatial volume of the largest hall was divided into two floors and numerous individual rooms. There were two castle chapels, the smaller of which is preserved together with its Gothic frescoes. Today, Burgdorf Castle is the best preserved Zähringen castle complex anywhere in Switzerland.
